WELDING TO SUPPORT TUNNEL
Montana Ironworks’ team of highly skilled welders are an asset to complex projects requiring a wide range of welding processes and materials.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Montana Ironworks supported a highly technical project requiring an 800-foot tunnel bored and lined with pipe underneath Interstate 90. Early stages of the project required Montana Ironworks to weld a large volume of heavy, wide flange structural members to support a 30-foot-deep excavated hole. This established the tunnel entrance and created a backstop for the boring equipment. Montana Ironworks welded a large diameter flange to the sheet pile wall and used an oxygen lance to cut through the sheet pile to establish the tunnel entrance. Montana Ironworks welded additional flanges on the pipe as it was pressed through the ground. As pressure increased on the pipe during the boring process, Montana Ironworks welded 60 one-inch thread-o-lets in the pipe to allow for the injection of friction-reducing materials.
