POMPEYS PILLAR

On July 25, 1806, 2nd Lt. William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, carved his name into Pompeys Pillar, a sandstone rock east of Billings, MT. His signature is the only remaining on-site physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which began in 1804. Montana Ironworks had the privilege of participating on a rock stabilization and water mitigation project to protect Pompeys Pillar from further erosion and help preserve an important piece of Montana’s history as well as our early nation’s history.
